Midwest Ski Areas Association (MSAA) held its second Midwest Terrain Park Summit at Mt. Holly Ski Area in Michigan on February 27-28. This location just outside of Detroit was a great venue for this event. Mark Tibbitts and the staff at Mt. Holly did everything possible, under some tough weather conditions, to make this event a success. Thank you to the Mt. Holly team!
MSAA believes that terrain park education is very important and is something that our membership appreciates. We see many young, new faces at these events. Most of them have not attended our full summer meeting and trade show. It is great to see the passion of the park crew individuals, and the excitement to learn and share ideas. MSAA is very happy that ski area General Managers have given this opportunity to their young staff. This education should benefit your ski area.
We started the first day overviewing the NSAA Freestyle Terrain Resource Guide. All ski areas were given a print and digital copy of the guide. We enjoyed a lunch GM Panel Discussion that welcomed questions from the attendees. We were very fortunate to have the new NSAA President Kelly Pawlak join us on this panel and for the whole event. In the afternoon, we hit the outdoors to focus on feature construction and maintenance. The afternoon continued indoors with terrain park operations and risk management. Finally concluding the day with design and park layout for your guests.
Day two started off on the snow spending significant time on accident investigation and jump measurement. We also continued the design and park layout lesson from day one, but now brought it out to the slopes. We debriefed the morning outdoor sessions over lunch. The afternoon included a legal update and work comp discussion.
MSAA would like to thank the staff at NSAA (Dave Byrd, Earl Saline and Kelly Pawlak) for working with us to put together great content for this event. Also, a special thanks to our insurance sponsors and presenters Mistica Walker and Tim Bruce from Safehold and Brian Rosser from MountainGuard and Tyson Vaughn from Gregory & Appel Insurance. We were fortunate to have terrain park experts Elia Hamilton, VP Terrain Development Peak Resorts and Brian Norton, Boyne Resorts, share their expertise with the attendees. The park staff attendees showed great respect for their knowledge and were comfortable interacting with them. Elia and Brian were stars!
This event takes the help of many to be a success and MSAA appreciates the help we get in putting this together. We hope that we see many of the attendees again at our MSAA Summer Meeting and Tradeshow to be held at Boyne Highlands, MI August 19-22. There will be terrain park sessions at the conference as well as many other topics that will benefit them in their careers.
